Germany, you are a mystery to me. I have long given up being part of you, despite my German passport. For many years I tried to become German, which is of course difficult when you move here when you’re 30 and have never been here before, hardly speak the language…and for historical reasons have this passport that says you ARE German. I learnt the rather difficult language quickly, but…after so many years you guys still called me “ihr Amerikaner”. So, I gave up. I no longer wanted to “integrate”. Now, I am what I am. An American in Germany.
Excuse me for writing this piece in English. I was determined to publish this blog in German. For a German audience. These were the days when I really wanted to “integrate”, to be – or become – German. A friend proofread everything so it was in perfect German. No longer. I am no longer embarrassed by my imperfect German. And when I write about you Germans, I think in English and so please allow me to write in English. The next piece will be in German again.
I am puzzled about you, once again. Absolutely. You are in a green hype. The Green Party and its popstar leaders are topping the polls, one of them may become your next chancellor. It should not be too difficult to win against a dull Merkel clone whose name nobody can pronounce so that everybody calls her AKK. AKK – imagine. What a name.
Surely, America is no stranger to political lunacy. Compared to Trump, all your figures are wonderful. Yet we have hope. We have Bernie Sanders, we have Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Admittedly, another complicated name, so we call her AOC. AOC sounds better than AKK, anyway.
And you have these Greens.
Yeah. They’re more affable than all the other idiots. Look at this BlackRock manager who almost became Merkel’s successor. Look at these Social Democrats. I mean, who takes them seriously? This Rezo youtuber did a wonderful job in exposing the completely emptiness of your party establishment. You are lucky that your right-wing extremists are amateurs, too. Your billionaires and oligarchs are not behind them, they still back the establishment, the CDU. That’s a big difference to America.
So, in the polls the Greens rise and rise and now they’re ahead of the CDU. A coalition of the Greens with the CDU looks increasingly likely. Yet what I don’t understand is why nobody in your Land of the Dichter and Denker thinks a minute ahead and questions what these Greens are. What will happen when they rule. In a coalition with exactly this CDU.
Let’s first look at where they rule already. In your Länders, your federal states, you have them in government almost everywhere. Have you noticed a difference anywhere? It escapes my attention that in Baden-Württemberg, in Hessen, in Berlin, in Schleswig-Holstein, in Hamburg, in Thuringen, wherever, the realities are different from Bavaria or Lower Saxony. Apart from that, did you notice that this country seems to be literally fed up with the CDU, and the only way the Greens have to get into the Cabinet is a coalition with exactly this party?
So you vote for the Greens to get rid of the CDU and what you get is a government of the Greens with exactly this CDU. Very nice.
Did they ever tell you what they will do in government? No? They didn’t have to, because you never asked them. You are happy with a feeling. Feeling Green. Young and modern pop stars are better than old bureaucrats who don’t understand how to deal with social media. Haha.
The first piece questioning that was in taz, a paper that I don’t like because it is so Greens-affiliated. A good piece, really – read it before you vote for them.
Let me tell you what will happen to this country, the country I live in, two years after the Greens rule jointly in a coalition with the CDU.
There will be Rezo videos against the Greens, for continuing the same old bullshit that we see now. There will be widespread protests against the austerity that they will impose in the wake of trade wars affecting the German export economy, bringing the global crisis back home to your glorious car industry. There will be something like the French yellow vests movement – not against a few ecotaxes but against the failure to tax the rich to make the poor richer. And you will be lucky that your AfD is such a disorganized bunch of amateurs that they get nowhere close to France’s Marine LePen.
You will have your Green government and you will have the economic crisis that these pop stars are not prepared for. They are a feeling, nothing more.
And your capitalists, the ones ruling the country in reality, won’t care who sits in the Chancellery and in the Bundestag. They get what they want. They get austerity, a proper and growing low-wage sector, a dying Tarifvertrag system, weak trade unions, global competition against China, deregulation, and low taxes for the rich and the corporations. Of course, painted with a little greenery. Maybe with a Mietpreisbremse that works.
The only problem is, people will feel the pain and won’t buy the Green stories any longer. You will be just like the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands. Political chaos, political parties falling apart and no proper alternative emerging. And it won’t matter, because the capitalists get what they want under any political setup, as long as you prevent a progressive movement like Bernie Sanders in America from getting the power that is now shaking America.
Bernie is changing America, already now. Your Greens are changing nothing, they’re stabilizing the capitalist system destroying people and the planet. That’s the big difference.
The Greens are not what you think they are. Think about it.
